70th Birthday of Edale MRT

EMRT Logo

On the 19th February 1956, Tom Tomlinson (the first full-time head warden of the Peak District National Park) and Fred Heardman (the landlord of the Old Nags Head public house in Edale), along with colleagues and friends from the National Park Warden Service and local volunteers gathered at the Nags Head for the first training exercise of what became Edale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT).

Today is the 70th anniversary of that gathering at the Nags and the 70th birthday of Edale MRT.

We would firstly like to raise a glass to all those that have volunteered in the Team over the last 70 years as well as their families and friends that enabled them to do so. We have a remarkable history of which we are very proud.

A thank you to everyone that has supported and donated to the Team. Since those early days expectations of the team have increased dramatically with significantly more call outs and far more sophisticated equipment we use. All of this costs a lot of money and we continue to be grateful for your support.

Also a mention to the thousands of casualties that we have cared for and stretchered off the moors and crags hereabouts.

Thank you also to our sister Mountain Rescue Teams here in the Peak District and to the partner agencies for all their help over the years. Greatly appreciated.

There will be a few events through our 70th year and the re-telling of a few stories on our socials.

Thank you to everyone that has been a part of the Team over the last 70 years.

Happy Birthday Edale Mountain Rescue Team.
